Our Uganda Friday: Creative Writing Talent in Uganda
by Darlyne Komukama
We love to read here at Awava and I can describe to you the excitement we had at discovering these two Ugandan websites that have quickly made it onto our daily visits.
First up is Uganda Modern Literary Digest or UMLD.
UMLD is a literary webzine for "some very fine writing from Uganda." Every month, it has about 5 new short stories by Ugandan writers and going through them, it is possible to believe that this country has a great future in literary fiction. The stories are personal, insightful and wonderfully written. We highly recommend it.
The next site is Urban Legend Kampala or ULK. (Yes, we are all about abbreviations here, in Uganda.)
ULK is a humour/satire site run by 5 very funny Ugandan men. Baz, Ivan, Erique, Sleek and Streetsider all got their start in the blogging community and quickly became the go-to blogs for many Ugandans. They then came upon the genius idea of starting their own website which has been going from strength to strength mainly because of their finger-on-the-pulse style of topical humour.
We hope you guys come to appreciate these websites as much as we do.
The rains are back, here in Kampala, so stay warm as you have a great weekend.

Ethical Valentine's Sale Featuring Awava, Waswad, Nabukenya Helen, Kikapu by Furaha B. & Afriart Gallery Photos!
We had a FANTASTIC day at the Ethical Valentine's Sale at Lotus Mexicana Cantina and Beach Bar last Saturday! The sun was shining, mojitos were frosty and delicious, smiles galore and we were surrounded throughout the day by straight up amazing people!
Awava was proud to have shared the day with our friend and partner, Waswad, as well as Nabukenya Helen and her one-of-a-kind, upcycled hand painted shoes, the beautiful and perfectly executed Kikapu by Furaha B., and one of the first and BEST art galleries in Kampala, Afriart Gallery. The capoeira dancers from Senzala Uganda were beyond impressive with their moves (which made us want to play Tekken 3 a little bit).
We want to sent a huge thank you to our host, Lotus Mexicana, to the amazing artists and artisans we had the honour of sharing the day with, and to all of the wonderful customers who came, appreciated and bought tons of stuff! Awava loves you!

Our Uganda Friday: A Culturally Packed Weekend of FUN!!!
by Kate von Achen
This weekend has so much amazingness happening in Kampala we can't even believe it! And it's all FREE ENTRY! Looks like sleep is out of the question!
Tonight at Afriart Gallery Jjuuko Hoods, one of my faves, will be opening his new exhibition with recent paintings, sculptures and furniture with opening cocktail from 6pm until 9pm.
Tomorrow, Edison Mugalu, impressively self-taught artist specializing in impressionist depictions of urban street scenes and Zanzibari fishing villages, to name a few, will be opening his exhibition of new works at AKA Gallery (formerly Tulifanya Gallery) from 10am.
Also tomorrow, don't miss the Ethical Valentine's Sale featuring Awava, Waswad, Nabukenya Helen, Kikapu by Furaha B. and Afriart Gallery from 1pm at Lotus Mexicana Cantina and Beach Bar, with special performances by Arte do Brazil and their amazing Capoeira dance, as well as Galaxy Dance Project's breakdancers! Also in store, a 5k taco bar AND free cocktails with purchase of main entree!
And finally, Sunday! Enjoy a nice, relaxing Wineart Lunch at Cafe Kawa & Wine Garage in Muyenga.
WINEART - sensorial and aesthetic experience: TASTE ART THROUGH WINE AND FOOD
The aim of WINEART lunch is to guide the audience along an artistic route, where you can taste twists and connections between Art, Wine and Food.
Arts, in all its forms, will be the protagonist of the event. The attendees will perceive the artistic content through their eyes and taste buds, exploring the synergy between gastronomical and enological features.
Come and find the connection between the painitng exhibited and three different wines enjoying a tempting selection of three different menu, and choosing your testing and aesthetic route...
Music and sounds from Chris Johnson will create the perfect background and atmosphere...
