Our Uganda Friday: 6 August 2010

by Hanna Schwing

This week the Awava Uganda team has been in Gulu to lead a business skills training workshop with our artisans based in Gulu District. The workshop has been fantastic (Look for an upcoming blog about it from Kate!), but the electricity has been out for at least 12 hours. So this week's Our Uganda Friday is coming at you a bit late. Sorry sorry.

Today we're featuring art by Anwar Sadat Nakibinge.

That's this guy:

Anwar Sadat Nakibinge, Ugandan artist.

Not this guy:

Muhammad Anwar El Sadat, Egypt's third president and Nobel Peace Laureate.

Nakibinge is an upcoming Ugandan artist, and he seemed like a pretty patient guy when I told him how much I liked the use of color and texture in his paintings. Yep, look to me for original commentary on art. While he has had solo exhibitions at proper art galleries, his work is currently on display at Wood Side, a furniture store near Lugogo shopping mall in Kampala, Uganda. "Buy a painting to match your new sofa set" seems to be the marketing plan. Fair enough. It can sometimes be hard to get your dues as an artist in Uganda.

Here are some pretty photos pulled from Nakibinge's facebook page.
